Re: U.S. Coin Composition Poll.

:rolleyes_m: When ? I have no idea.

Composition ?

Aluminum or steel are likely replacements ...both cheap.

Or...maybe the new Amero plastic coins will replace everything.

It would be a smart cost cutting move to eliminate coins entirely and replace them with paper denominations of the same value.

No legitimate reason they couldn't.

The vending machine cartel wouldn't be too happy, but what do they care ?

they will issue paper coins. or plastic. although plastic is made from oil, which maybe means it will be plastic with spaces inside. you know, filled with air. or still maybe eco friendly processed bamboo. like those hard wood floor substitutes

I am travelling through Western Canada for work this week. I will have sometime on Tuesday afternoon in Winnipeg and am planning on doing the Royal Canadian Mint tour.

I will ask them :-)

Re: U.S. Coin Composition Poll.

Also, when they do change coin composition, will they be able to stop hoarding and processing (melting)??

Copper content in pennies changed in 1982, but it's illegal to melt them down...

In addition, highly flamable materials....plastic, wood-particle should be ruled out.
Steel seems likely, but even aluminum will one day be too pricey.

Also, if they go to a single metal, how easy would it be to counterfeit them?

I found this interesting:

Congress would have to pass new standards and the President sign it before any changes could be made. Congress works SLOW!!!

They are losing 300 million a month in Iraq/Afganistan, so whats the big deal of loosing a few more on the coinage?

Not arguing just pointing out the stupidity.

Yet, millions are being made (literally & figuratively). It cost them approx. 0.04 to manufacture an FRN (doesn't matter if it's $1 bill or a $100 bill). And these are out of thin air. Not to mention the electronic money that seems to just happen.

Maranatha,

Re: U.S. Coin Composition Poll.

Igor says we should offically eliminate all coins and go to a paper standard. A case of 5000 sheets of computer paper goes for about $25.00. So the new standard is one sheet of 8x11.5 is worth 1/2 of a cent and scale it down from there.

Ever read the fine print on those grocery store coupons. A lot of them say "Cash value=1/20 of 1 cent". That is starting to look like a great deal. :confused_ma:
